We plan on renting a narrowboat in England during the busy part of next summer (July) and were wondering about the best routes to take. We're looking for scenic views, interesting stops, and maybe some fun pubs along the way. Has anyone navigated the canals during the summer? Any advice on popular routes or hidden gems would be super helpful!

I'd be happy to help you plan your narrowboat adventure! The British canals are absolutely wonderful in summer. Having said that, July is peak season so you'll want to plan ahead.

The Oxford Canal is one of my top recommendations for first-timers - it's known for its gentle pace and stunning Cotswolds scenery. The stretch from Oxford to Banbury is particularly picturesque, with beautiful stone villages and excellent canalside pubs like The Rock of Gibraltar in Enslow and The Boat Inn at Thrupp.

Another fantastic option is the Llangollen Canal in Wales/Shropshire. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a UNESCO World Heritage site and truly spectacular - crossing it by boat feels like sailing through the sky! Just book well in advance as this route gets very busy in summer.

For something a bit less crowded but equally beautiful, consider the Caldon Canal in Staffordshire. It branches off from the Trent & Mersey and winds through the lovely Churnet Valley. The Black Lion at Consall Forge is a wonderfully remote pub that's only accessible by boat, foot or steam train.

A few summer-specific tips:
- Book your boat at least 6 months ahead for July
- Plan shorter daily distances than you might think (4-5 hours of cruising is plenty)
- Allow extra time for queues at locks during peak season
- Consider starting mid-week rather than weekend for slightly quieter locks
- Make dinner reservations at canalside pubs in advance during high season

Have you decided how long you'll be renting the boat for? That would help narrow down the best route options for your timeframe.

What a delightful adventure you're planning! 🌞 It sounds like you have some great routes in mind already. If you're looking for something with a blend of scenic beauty and history, the Grand Union Canal could also be an excellent choice. It offers stunning views as you navigate through lovely countryside, plus you'll find plenty of charming towns along the way, like Leighton Buzzard and Berkhamsted.

And since you're interested in fun pubs, do check out The Greyhound Inn in Tring, which has a lovely garden. Just to add, have you thought about how many days you'll want to spend on the boat? That could really help in deciding which route suits you best. Happy planning!

The Llangollen Canal is a great recommendation! If you're looking for critical insights, keep in mind that summer can get quite busy on the waterways, especially around popular spots like the Llangollen Aqueduct. Booking your mooring in advance is wise. Additionally, consider the weather—summer storms can pop up, so having a flexible itinerary might be beneficial. Are there specific historical sites or types of scenery you want to prioritize on your journey? That could help refine your route even further!
