Advice Devonshire Cream Substitute Ideas

Fresh clotted cream is extremely difficult to acquire in Canada due to pasteurization laws, however, I really want to recreate that authentic scone experience at home. I've heard about some substitutes like mascarpone or whipped cream, but I’m curious about how close they get to the real thing. Has anyone found a good alternative that works for scones or as a topping for desserts? Any tips or recipes would be greatly appreciated!

If you're aiming for that rich, indulgent texture of clotted cream, a mix of mascarpone and lightly sweetened whipped cream can come surprisingly close. The mascarpone adds the thickness and richness, while the whipped cream brings in the lightness. Have you tried experimenting with the ratio to see what feels most authentic to you? Another option could be crème fraîche, which has a tangy depth that pairs beautifully with scones.

I've found that combining mascarpone with a bit of crème fraîche can also mimic the texture and flavor of clotted cream quite well. The crème fraîche adds a slight tanginess that complements the richness of the mascarpone. Have you considered adding a touch of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of powdered sugar to enhance the flavor? It might just bring you closer to that authentic scone experience.
