Question Do I Go Through Immigration on My Dublin Layover?

I'm flying from Chicago to Rome with a layover in Dublin, and I'm a bit confused about the process. Do I have to go through immigration in Dublin if I'm just connecting to my next flight? Also, any tips for making the most of a short layover in Dublin would be great! Thanks in advance!
