Advice Drawing Direct Routes on Map Apps

I'm working on my first maps and I'm finding the map program defaults to finding the nearest airport for travel, which isn't always what I want. Sometimes I drove or cruised instead. Is there a way to specify a direct driving or cruising route without it trying to route me to an airport? I think I might have figured it out, but any insights or tips from others who have tackled this would be super helpful.
