Advice Pickpocketing in Rome - How to Stay Safe?

I recently had a bad experience in Rome where I was pickpocketed on the metro near Termini station. Despite having my wallet zipped in a vest pocket close to my chest, they managed to get away with my passport, credit cards, cash, and health information. It was a crowded metro, and I never thought it would happen to me. The police even insisted it was lost, not stolen. I also met a couple from the UK who had their wallet stolen from the front pocket of their jeans. It seems like pickpocketing is a real issue in Rome, especially in crowded areas. Does anyone have tips on how to better protect yourself or any similar experiences to share?
