Question Planning a Day Trip to Paestum from Sorrento

I've made hotel reservations in Sorrento and want to take my husband to the Archeological Park and Greek ruins in Paestum this May. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get there—should we rent a car, or is public transport reliable enough for a day trip? Also, any tips on must-see spots within the ruins or nearby would be super helpful. We're both history buffs, so we're really looking forward to this!
