Question Side Trip from London: Paris or Berlin?

I'll be studying in London this fall semester and when my parents visit for eight days, we're planning to take a side trip. I'm torn between Paris and Berlin. Paris is closer and has iconic landmarks, but Berlin offers a rich history and vibrant culture. Has anyone done a similar trip from London? Which city would you recommend for a short visit, considering travel time, things to do, and overall experience?
