Discussion Versailles: Simply too crowded?

I recently came across an article in the Wall Street Journal highlighting how the Palace of Versailles is being overwhelmed by the sheer number of visitors. It got me thinking about my own visit last summer, where the crowds really took away from the experience. Has anyone else felt that the crowds at Versailles detract from its beauty and historical significance? I'm curious to know if there are specific times or tips to visit when it's less crowded, or if it's just something we have to accept when visiting such iconic places.
