Question Hotel Charged Me After Flight Cancellation - Fair?

We were supposed to fly from Charlotte, N.C. to Vienna on 4/26/19, arriving 4/27/19. I had booked a hotel in Vienna starting 4/27/19, but our flight got cancelled and we couldn't make it to Vienna. The hotel charged us for the first night anyway, saying it was a non-refundable booking. Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there any way to get the hotel to waive the fee under these circumstances, or is this just the risk we take with non-refundable bookings?
