Question Splitting Checks While Traveling

Hello, my wife and I are traveling to Switzerland in a few weeks with another couple. Is there an etiquette for splitting checks at restaurants when you’re dining out? We don’t want to create any awkwardness, but we also want to be fair. Do places in Switzerland typically allow separate checks, or should we plan to handle it differently?
